So, you need to buy a charger for your Macbook, but unfortunately, it’s an old model that’s not easy to find a replacement.
I know you might be looking for this brick here:
Please don’t buy that, let me offer you a better solution that’s more “future-proof”.
USB-C Fast Charger + High-Speed USB-C cable + USB-C to Magsafe adapter
It looks something like this:
Why?
- You can use that charger for literally anything else that’s modern. Type-C USB is the standard protocol for most of the technology devices.
- This combo provides flexibility of charging your portable power bank, and modern iPad too. So One charger for all things, don’t let an old Macbook charger make you carry one more brick around.
- Most importantly – if your old Macbook has unfortunately broken down, you can still use this charger + USB-C cable to charge your NEW M1, M2, Mx, and so on. Because it uses USB-C!
How?
See how nice it looks? It has an indicator light just like the original Magsafe.
Which model precisely do I use here
I am using a Macbook Air 2015 running Ventura, you can learn how to update your old Macbook to Ventura here.
- Charger – from Baseus, 67w
- Cable – Baseus too, supports up to 100w
- USBC to Magsafe adapter – A cheap one works, but you can use this as well.
Where to buy and what specifications to look for
You can easily find something similar online.
The brand I use might not be available in your country. However, something like these would work:
Charger – At least 67w, I can’t say for sure, but the original large brick charger is 45w, so there might be a chance if the voltage is too low it won’t charge. And hey, I got mine working at 67w, don’t risk it buying something cheaper. – More On Amazon
Cable – Mine is 100w, don’t go lower than 67w. And most importantly it’s USB-C to USB-C, don’t mess that up. – More On Amazon
USB-C to Magsafe adapter – The key component, don’t buy anything that cannot take 100w. More On Amazon
The upside
- Future proof if you need to charge a (touch wood) potential new Macbook.
- Lighter than the old brick
- One charger for many
- Modern looking
The downside
- Not cheap at all. The above combination costs around 50 USD.
So, if you are looking for a used or replacement Macbook charger like these:
It only costs around 15 USD.
I would use a USB-C charger
I do, as you can see.
Because then I will not have a useless charger I don’t know how to deal with when the old Macbook broke down.
Do the earth a bit better, I guess. (Also as a preparation for a new Mac, of course)
